PEORIA, Ill. – For the 20th year, the Saturday mornings on the river means fresh produce and homemade products.
The Peoria Riverfront Market begins Saturday on the Peoria Riverfront, running from 8:00 A.M. to noon each Saturday until around September.
Peoria Riverfront Association Executive Director Sharon Gramm tells WMBD’s “Greg and Dan” how the idea for the market came to be.
“The Peoria Riverfront Association, their board got together and decided they wanted to create something that would bring more people downtown on, not necessarily a Friday night or a Saturday night, but another time during the day,” Gramm said. “To bring people downtown, to get them to enjoy what we have to offer downtown, to support the surrounding businesses, that type of thing.”
The market will be selling t-shirts with designs from local artists to honor the 20th year of the market.
Gramm says around 100 vendors will take part at the start of the season, and grow to about 125 as the year goes on.
“We are a producers-only market. So everything must be grown, made, or created by the person selling it. And everything must be grown within the state of Illinois. So it’s kind of the growing season in Illinois,” Gramm said.
Gramm says that means a lot of green vegetables will start the year.
