PEKIN, Ill. — Harper spends a lot of her time helping kids learn to read with the “Paws to Read” program and visiting nursing homes.
But, now she’s got something quite impressive on her resume.
The 7-year-old Border Collie, a rescue from T.A.P.S. in Pekin, has been chosen to represent her fellow rescue dogs in the national “Indoguration” honoring Major Biden, one of President-Elect Joe Biden’s two German Shepherds.
The event was sponsored by the Delaware Humane Society, where Major Biden was adopted, and Pumpkin Insurance, a pet insurance company.
Major will be the first rescue dog to live in the White House.
“It was last Tuesday night that I got confirmation that she was one of the finalists,” said Harper’s owner and and handler Colleen Kahl.
Kahl is a Government teacher at Pekin High School. She said Harper is now spending time with her at school, getting a lot of attention in the hallways.
“When the school caught word that we do this in our free time, we started where she comes into the school once a week,” Kahl said.
Kahl learned about the Indoguration on Facebook. She said Harper’s platform “reached across the aisle to her feline counterparts to support animal rights and rescue adoptions.”
Harper was one of five finalists chosen to be the nation’s Cabinet Secretary of Rescue Dogs. Her prizes, Kahl said, were a commemorative bow tie, a dog toy, and free vaccinations for a year.
